InBody 380 Body Composition: Know What Your Weight Is Made Of
A scale gives you one number. The InBody 380 shows what makes up that number.
The InBody 380 breaks body weight down into muscle, fat and water, and it shows how muscle is spread across the arms, legs and trunk. It's quick, noninvasive and takes about 30 seconds. You stand barefoot on the platform and hold the handgrips. Nothing to swallow, no needles and no pain. Athletes and parents leave with a clear picture of where the athlete is today and a baseline to measure progress against.
Why Body Composition Matters
Weight doesn't tell the whole story. Two athletes can weigh the same and have very different amounts of muscle and fat.
Muscle drives performance. Skeletal muscle is what produces force, so knowing how much an athlete has helps guide their training.
Progress you can see. The scale may not move while an athlete gains muscle and loses fat. The InBody shows both changes.
Better conversations about health. It shifts the focus from "lose weight" or "gain weight" to building a strong, healthy body.
What the InBody 380 Measures
Weight. Your total body weight.
Skeletal Muscle Mass. The muscle you train and use to move, jump and swing.
Body Fat Mass and Percent Body Fat. How much of your weight is fat, in pounds and as a percentage.
Segmental Lean Analysis. Muscle in each arm, each leg and the trunk, so left-to-right and upper-to-lower balance is easy to see.
Total Body Water and ECW Ratio. How much water your body holds, and the share of it outside your cells compared with your total body water.
Phase Angle. A whole-body reading tied to the health of your cells.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). An estimate of the calories your body burns at rest, calculated from your lean mass.
Visceral Fat Level. An estimate of the fat stored around your internal organs.
Overall Health
Body composition gives you a better picture of health than weight or BMI on their own. Knowing how much of your weight is muscle and how much is fat helps you set realistic goals and track whether your habits are working. The InBody is a wellness and performance tool. It is not a medical test and does not diagnose any condition. Bring any health concerns to your doctor.
See muscle and fat separately instead of one combined number.
Keep an eye on visceral fat, which is fat stored deep in the belly, not just the fat you can see.
Understand your energy needs using BMR as a starting point for fueling.
Track healthy changes over time with a body composition history on every report.
Benefits for Athletes
-
Instead of guessing whether a training block is working, we can see whether skeletal muscle mass is going up. That lets us adjust training so athletes add muscle that actually helps them perform.
-
BMR gives athletes and parents a starting point for how much energy the body needs at rest. Paired with total body water readings, it helps start conversations about eating enough and staying hydrated to train and recover well.
-
Segmental analysis shows muscle in each arm and leg. Big differences between sides can point to areas to strengthen. That's useful to know in sports where athletes jump, land and swing one way over and over.
-
Each report includes a history of past scans, so changes in muscle and fat are easy to follow from one season to the next. Testing under the same conditions each time keeps the comparisons accurate.
-
Muscle is the engine, and force plates measure how much power that engine produces. Combining InBody results with our Hawkin Dynamics force plate data shows force relative to body weight, and whether added weight is muscle that helps an athlete or extra mass they have to carry.
-
Objective, printed results give athletes real numbers to share with coaches. Combined with force plate testing, they show physical development over time, not just a single snapshot.
What to Expect
The test takes about 30 seconds. For the most accurate and consistent results:
Test at the same time of day each time you come in. Morning is best.
Don't eat for about 3 hours before your test, and use the restroom beforehand.
Skip exercise before testing. Avoid hard workouts in the 1–3 days before if you can, and avoid a sauna or hot shower right before.
Hydrate normally the day before and in the hour before your test. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours.
Remove socks, jewelry, watches and other metal, and skip lotion on your hands and feet.
Wear light clothing.
Please let us know in advance if you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device (InBody testing isn't used in that case), if you're pregnant, or if you have metal implants.
